Applications
 
 There are two main configurations of serial data communication wiring.
  • The most common is referred to as a ring star configuration. This configuration has every on-board computer's data communication wire connected at a common splice (shown below) or star connector (in parallel with each other). This type if serial data uses a single wire data line.

 

  • The other configuration is referred to as a daisy chain, loop, or linear topology. CAN data systems use this configuration. In this type of configuration, the on-board computers are connected in series with each other. This type if serial data uses a dual wire data line.
