Checking for a Good Power Feed

Checking for a Good Power Feed

When checking for a good power feed, perform the testing in a live circuit with a DMM.

  • Start the engine to bring the system voltage up to normal.
  • Place one meter lead at the battery positive terminal.
  • Place the other lead at the point where you are testing for a good power feed.

A good power feed will show up on the meter as a very low voltage (typically 0.1V or lower). Note: Higher current circuits (headlights, starter, alternator, etc.) will have higher normal voltage readings. The higher the voltage displayed on the DMM, the worse the power feed connection is. Look at a wiring diagram and locate and clean every connection between the battery positive terminal the point where you were testing for a good power feed.
