Art 1135 - Approaches to Material, Space, & Time

This course is often everyone's favorite to teach. 2 instructors collaborate to develop a course divided into 2 complimentary workshops. Feel free to theme both workshops in relation to shows in our Shaw Gallery or at OCA. We encourage instructors to shape their workshops to address course objectives using the means and materials they are most proficient at teaching. Students will benefit from working in traditional craft-based approaches as well as the most experimental practices. Workshops will offer our students the opportunity to work outside of their comfort range, learn from experts in their fields, and discover new ways of making, composing, and communicating through art and design.

As a shared effort across both workshops, please address the following in this course:

  • 4D media (performance, video, sound, interaction, animation)
  • Photography
  • Installation & Site-based work
  • Material studies and research

On the first day of class, all 36 students and the 2 instructors should meet in one room. Often folks coordinate a larger lecture space for day 1 by contacting the DOVAD admin and requesting access ahead of time. Instructors should explain the structure, preview the class, break into groups, and name the groups (perhaps with an icebreaker for inspiration.) In the second half of the first class students can move to their first workshop classroom and begin. At midterm (according to the provided schedule) the cohorts will switch workshops. The instructor will have a fresh group of students and repeat the same workshop. At the end of term, students should submit a final portfolio sharing their work from both workshops.

Adobe Portfolio:

In this Foundations course, students will begin their portfolio, which they will continue to develop as they work through the 4-year program. The department uses these sites for scholarships and more. In the first week, they should sign up for their account. At the end of term, they should have a graded submission of work created in the class. Examples can be found in the shared Canvas content.
