In How Cities Won the West, Carl Abbott makes the case that to understand the West one must understand its cities. Abbot challenges readers to leave behind the fantasy of a redemptive rural West (the frontier myth) for the reality of an urban geography that increasingly wields tremendous power, both economically and culturally.
Write a 4-6 page paper in which you explain your understanding of Abbott's arguments.that western cities have evolved to be different that their eastern counterparts and that these commercial centers have been crucial to the economic and political growth of the West. Focus on the following:
- How have urban ambitions characterized imperial interest in the West from the point of earliest European colonization to the present
- How does Abbott'e study further wreck the frontier myth?
- How have western cities wielded power over the landscape and cultural imagination -- especially since WWII?
Cite pages in Abbott within ( ). If you use other sources -- cite using Turabian style.
